Longevity & Labs

Your annual checkup misses a lot. Here's what else you can test.

Standard bloodwork tells you if something is wrong. Comprehensive longevity panels tell you where you're heading. This category covers the programs that go deeper — biomarker testing, preventive panels, and the services that help you interpret what your numbers actually mean.

ApoB, Lp(a), hsCRP, HbA1c — what each marker tells you and optimal ranges.

Standard labs vs. longevity panels — what's the difference?

Standard Annual Bloodwork

Ordered by your primary care physician. Typically includes a complete metabolic panel, CBC, lipid panel, and thyroid. Designed to flag pathology — it catches things that are already wrong. Generally covered by insurance at your annual wellness visit.

Longevity & Biomarker Panels

Includes advanced cardiovascular markers (ApoB, Lp(a)), inflammation markers (hsCRP, homocysteine), hormones, metabolic markers, and sometimes genetic or microbiome data. Designed to show trajectory and enable early intervention. Typically out of pocket — not covered by insurance.

Common longevity and lab testing questions.

Function Health offers a panel of over 100 biomarkers twice per year, covering metabolic, hormonal, cardiovascular, and inflammatory markers not typically included in a standard annual checkup. Results include clinician-reviewed interpretations. An annual membership fee applies. Verify current pricing and panel contents at their website.
ApoB (apolipoprotein B) is a protein found on all atherogenic lipoprotein particles, including LDL. ApoB counts the number of particles directly and is considered a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than LDL-C alone by many cardiologists. Standard lipid panels often don't include it — longevity panels typically do.
Standard preventive labs at your annual wellness visit are typically covered. Comprehensive concierge panels from programs like Function Health or Lifeforce are generally not covered by insurance. Some HSA and FSA accounts may cover certain tests — verify with your plan administrator before paying out of pocket.
